Hitting those milestones

Hitting those milestones

Earlier this month, I hit the big 3-0.

Those big birthdays always make me look back at how far I've come and where I'm headed.
I remember when I was 3 years old, chasing my cousins around the yard of my grandma’s house in the summer of 1986. I chased them proudly with snot pouring from my nostrils as their screams echoed off the walls of nearby homes for all the neighbors to hear — evidence that my cousins were none too thrilled with the possibility of nasal discharge taking up residence on their person. I laughed until breathing became a struggle from the sheer exhilaration of causing my family members such discomfort!

A few years later and still a bit of an instigator at age 7, I strained my cheek muscles as I fought the urge to giggle while handing my sister (7 years my senior) a chilly glass of toilet water I mustered up from the family restroom. My face, a traitor to my revolting plan, revealed my ghastly intentions to my sister who never requested my services for water retrieval again.

If you had asked me as a child what I envisioned my life to be like at age 30, my answer would have been simple. I would have a job, kids, probably a husband, and a pet or two. I would have planned to engage the entire family in a game of “Duck, Duck, Goose!” at our family reunions and the thought of leaving home was far from conceivable in my reality.

Now I am gasping for air from my 3-decade plunge through life! What started off as a leisurely wading through school quickly evolved into a 10km race toward a joyful marriage, parenthood, homeownership, and fulfilling career! Today, I climbed out of the waters, spilling a lifetime of experience over the tile floor as I shakily found my feet. I looked back at the ripples of my journey and realized I’m proud of my accomplishments, but saddened by my rush to accomplish! I’ve decided that as I make my mark in the next 30 years, I’ll remember to bring my head out of the water to take some much-needed breaths! And I promise that I won’t chase anyone around with snot pouring from my nose ... unless I have to!

What milestone birthdays meant the most to you?
